Kip’s been places. Attacking stories from remote corners and undisclosed places. Critical stories that deserve coverage. She’s packed a lifetime of intense digging to sweep a spotlight on topics most look away from. The underbelly.
Amazon Basin bordering Colombia/Venezuela: to track the illegal gold mining of indigenous lands. (Yanomami). What is so striking about the coverage Kip managed is the stark truth about the players in this remote highly coveted region. The local “campesinos” living in the jungles are the gold miners “garimpeiros”, the military zones created by the various government interests, the indigenous tribes. What’s at stake, what is happening who is affected and why does it matter? Going in you may think you have all the answers, Kip points out the few subtle truths about what’s in the actual is going on “on the ground” and more aptly “in the ground”. Rich in not only gold, but other highly sought after minerals.
Poland / Ukraine Border at immediate start of Russian War with Ukraine: Kip covered the first exodus of Ukrainian refugees fleeing as the Russians rolled in. Miles and miles of buses carrying women, children, elderly and wounded to Korczowa Poland’s first ad hoc refugee encampments established along the Ukrainian border in subzero temperatures. Women carrying their infants and young children 8 hours to reach these exit routes.
Caracas, Venezuela: In the years before/ during / after the Chavez reign through to the rise of Maduro, Kip was embedded with the counter sequester unit (anti-kidnapping unit) dedicated to reuniting families members who had been kidnapped for extortion. Capturing these stories up into barrios Petare and others, Kip worked with this elite team as they broke the kidnapping “bandas” and returned the kidnapped. Kip focused on the one truth that sometimes gets forgotten. There is a distinct line drawn between the before and after of any kidnap. Whatever the motivation for these kidnappings, be it a wealthy individual or an act of vengeance, whatever the motivation, lives are never ever the same.
North Carolina, Hurricane Helene: Kip covered the destruction at the epicenter of North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains in small rural South Toe, NC where lives and property were lost in the flash flooding. The Appalachia Strong movement was building steam and soon to take aim at any and all outsiders from reporters covering national news to the FEMA officers afraid to show their badges and perform their critical work of assessing the destruction in the midst of enthusiastic and amped up gun-toting locals. Most startling discovery Kip learned firsthand was how a storm could become political was taking root in the red, red soil.
Nogales, Sonora, Mexico: Kip was on the ground at the Kino Border Initiative Shelter before / during / immediately after the Trump Administration terminated all immigration appointments and shut the border. Venturing out in the desert with local search and rescue teams, Kip witnessed firsthand the effects this had on the migrant population. The stories from this cartel corridor Kip witnessed in the desperate population as they weighed self deportation vs the threat of being shipped off to CECOT prison El Salvador. Covering the false narrative of self deportation, the cartel’s power on both sides of the border, the death and violence of the vulnerable migrant population. The accounts by the migrants of their trials and travels through the most dreaded stretch of jungle from Colombia to Panama and on to Mexico known as the Darien Gap.
Virginia Beach, VA: Kip is covering the heinous story of Angelina Recendiz, Naval Officer brutally raped and murdered by fellow Navy sailor, Jer’Miah Copeland. This is an ongoing story and Kip has been granted exclusive coverage by Angelina’s mother, Esmeralda Castle. Angie was raped and murdered and stowed in a duffel bag for 4 days in Copeland's barrack’s room closet (he had 3 roommates). Copeland’s history, covered by Kip and her crew who tracked the story to Copeland’s hometown of Whidbey Island, WA, where they interviewed other female victims who describe Copeland’s pattern dating as far back as middle school of rape and filming and distributing the rape footage. Continuing t=with this developing story, Kip and her crew will cover the court martial trial to be held June 2026, Virginia Beach, VA.
Tijuana, Mexico: Kip is slated to work with The Deported Veteran Support House in TJ. Working to expose the truths behind this incongruous story of veterans who fight US wars with the promise of citizenship only to be deported. Though there are veterans dating as far back to their service in Vietnam War, this practice has been going on for many administrations. The uptick in the cruelty and finality of late is what needs to be addressed. This is a particularly cruel story given the fallout of these types of deportations. Veterans possess skill sets that the cartel want and ultimately get. They threaten anyone in the veteran’s family or life in an effort to recruit them for their skills. This arrangement with the cartel is ending so many of the deported veterans’ lives. This is an ongoing story Kip heads down feb 2026.
